Q: What is the fluoride level of the City’s drinking water?
A: The City’s drinking water contains approximately 0.35 mg/L of naturally occurring fluoride.

Q: What is the hardness of the City’s drinking water?
A: The average hardness of the City’s drinking water is 280 mg/l .

Q: How much sodium is in the City’s drinking water?
A: The City’s drinking water contains approximately 25 mg/L of sodium.

Q: Our water tastes funny—have you had any reports about the water being like this?
A: Anytime you have a concern about the quality of the water being delivered to your home, please call us.

Q: What chemicals are added to the water?
A: The following chemicals are added during the treatment process, in order of addition:
1. Potassium Permanganate: oxidant used for taste and odor
2. polymer: coagulant aid used for settling particles in the raw water
3. powdered activated carbon: used to adsorb taste and odors
4. sodium hydroxide: stabilize the water and reduce corrosion in the distribution system
5. chlorine: disinfection
6. ammonia: combines with the chlorine to make chloramines which allows the water to be disinfected longer

Q: How do we know the water is safe?
A: The City of Hillsboro’s drinking water meets or surpasses all federal and state drinking water standards.
City employees work around the clock to provide top quality water to every tap and the
water is monitored continuously to make sure that it meets stringent standards at all times.

Q: I have water leaking in my yard, driveway, etc. What do I do?
A: For any type of possible water leak, please call 947-3162. If it is after hours, or during the weekend,
call the same phone number and listen for instructions.

Q: My water meter is sunk down in the ground and it is dangerous.
Or… my water meter is too high and it is dangerous. What do I do?

A: Please call either 947-3162 or 947-3189 concerning problems
with your meter box or valve box near your home or business.
