K-9 Unit

The Hillsboro Police Department's K-9 Unit has been in service since April 1, 1998.
Otto, the city's first K-9, died from natural causes. Otto served within Hillsboro and Marion County.

Otto's position was filled by Rico, a Belgian Malinois, on December 14, 2001.
Rico has served throughout Marion County, and has assisted surrounding counties with special K-9 assignments.
Rico is trained in Narcotic Detection, Tracking, and Patrol.

The K-9 Unit is funded tax free to the citizens of Hillsboro and Marion County through private donations.
