K-9 Unit
The Hillsboro Police K-9 Unit started April
1st, 1998. Officer Jessey Hiebert handled Otto in the streets of Hillsboro
and Marion County. On May 3, 2001, Otto passed away due to stomach complications.
December 14, 2001, Rico became the new canine for the Hillsboro Police
Dept. and handled by Jessey Hiebert. On June 5, 2005, Officer Brad Richards
began handling Rico and is the current handler for Rico. Rico is a Malinois
breed that was imported from Belgium.
Rico is a dual purpose drug dog that can find marijuana, cocaine, heroin
and methamphetamine. Rico is trained to track or follow a man trail, recover
evidence discarded by criminals, obedience and handler protection.
Rico is certified every year under the trainer Nelson
Rivera K-9 and Heart
of America Police Dog Association.
