Firepup Program

The Hillsboro Fire Department participates in the National Fire Safety Council’s Firepup program. The NFSC developed Firepup, a friendly Dalmatian cartoon character, in an effort to help make learning about fire issues fun, entertaining and non-threatening.

Firepup & Fire Chief Ben Steketee make several appearances throughout the year giving presentations to children to help educate them on fire safety issues. The second week in October is dedicated as Fire Prevention Week. Among the yearly appearances, the duo speaks to students at Hillsboro Elementary, as well as preschool children, during this week. Local firemen also make an appearance as well to show the students that firemen really are not threatening even though they may be geared up in their equipment.
