Electric Utility Rates

The City of Hillsboro owns and operates an electric distribution system,
serving approximately 1,400 customers.

Electric power is purchased from Westar Energy

Billing and customer service inquiries are handled through the city offices at

It is the goal of the City of Hillsboro staff to keep the cost of electricity at a minimum. We strive to give the best quality service for the lowest rate possible.

Electric rates are set by demand charges. The greater the demands, the higher the electric costs will be. Peak demands are usually reached between 2-7 p.m. (July, August & September), during the hottest summer temperatures. By reducing peak demands during these times, we can maintain lower energy cost for every customer.

The following are some hints that can help all of us:
1) If possible, do laundry in the mornings or after 8:00 p.m.
2) Keep shades closed during the day to keep sun out.
3) Cook out on the grill or use a microwave oven.
4) When at work or away from home, turn the thermostat up to 80 or 82
degrees so the air conditioner doesn’t run so often.
5) Utilize clotheslines instead of using the dryer.
6) Try not to turn everything on at the same time. If possible, do evening
tasks at different times.

We understand that everyone cannot do this every day, but if each of us can pitch in, this will help all of us.
