Hillsboro is a D.A.R.E. community! The D.A.R.E. program is a cooperative effort
between law enforcement and schools. D.A.R.E. is an acronym for
Drug Abuse Resistance Education.
Our D.A.R.E. officer is David Funk, who has been in law enforcement
for eleven years, with the last four being in Hillsboro.
The program runs for sixteen weeks during the second semester
of school. Each week Officer Funk presents a 45 minute lesson to
every fifth grade class at Hillsboro Elementary.
The students learn about stressors, peer pressure, choices and consequences
as they relate to drugs and violence. The kids have the opportunity to role play
and practice different methods of saying "no" to various types of peer pressure.
After successful completion of the course, the students participate in a
culmination ceremony where one student from each class is
selected to read his or her essay about what the D.A.R.E program
has taught them. Officer Funk is confident that every student
comes away from the program with valuable information and the tools
necessary to handle the dangers of peer pressure and drugs.
